Conservation Area Consultation- Melton Mowbray

Overview

We’re asking for your views.

We are launching a consultation to help shape the updated Melton Mowbray Town Centre Conservation Area Appraisal (CAA).

What is a Conservation Area Appraisal?

A Conservation Area Appraisal is a positive, guiding document that:

  • identifies and celebrates the special architectural and historic character of an area,
  • explains what features contribute to its identity—such as materials, buildings, streets, rooflines, open spaces and local landmarks,
  • supports good design, helping development enhance what people value,
  • informs planning decisions, giving clarity for residents, developers and the wider community,
  • strengthens place‑making, ensuring future change contributes positively to Melton’s heritage and identity.

Updating the appraisal means we can create a shared, up‑to‑date understanding of what makes the town centre special today.

Why your views matter

Your knowledge, experiences and perspectives will play a vital role in defining what makes the town centre special and how we protect and celebrate its unique character for the future.

How you can help

We want to hear from residents, businesses, community groups and visitors about:

  • the buildings, spaces and features you feel define the character of Melton Mowbray,
  • the stories, heritage and qualities you think should be highlighted,
  • what makes the town centre distinctive, welcoming and worth caring for.

Your feedback will directly inform the updated Conservation Area Appraisal, currently being prepared with a conservation expert, alongside support from the Melton Heritage Society.

Why this work matters for Melton Mowbray

The Melton Mowbray Town Centre Conservation Area captures the historic heart of the town. The updated appraisal will act as a shared blueprint that:

  • inspires pride in local heritage,
  • guides sensitive, character‑enhancing growth,
  • ensures the town centre remains vibrant, distinctive and welcoming,
  • gives clarity and confidence to those investing in or caring for buildings.

We’d like your help to shape the final version

Your input will help ensure the updated Conservation Area Appraisal truly reflects the richness, identity and lived experience of Melton Mowbray’s town centre.

What happens next

The information will feed back into the Conservation Area Appraisal, which will set out the special architectural and historic character of the town centre and identify the features that make it worthy of protection. It will also outline the opportunities for enhancement, areas where the character is vulnerable, and guidance for managing future change in a positive way.

Once complete, the updated CAA will be used by the Council when determining planning applications, ensuring that development within the Conservation Area preserves or enhances its unique character. It will also act as a reference point for property owners, community groups and investors, providing clarity on what is important and what considerations apply within the Conservation Area boundary.

This review is therefore an important chance for residents, businesses and heritage groups to help shape how Melton Mowbray’s historic core is understood, valued and protected for years to come.
