Town Council for Melton Mowbray
Overview
We would like to understand your views on the idea of establishing a Melton Mowbray Town Council.
A town council is the first tier of local government. They have the same powers and can provide the same services as a parish council.
They are made up of locally elected people representing the interests of their community and providing a voice to the local community. They work with other tiers of government, such as a borough, county or unitary council, and external organisations to deliver services and improve the quality of life in the area.
Changes to local government
The Government is planning big changes to local councils across the country, including the councils throughout Leicestershire. They want to create new, larger, 'unitary' councils that provide all services to residents.
From April 2028 we expect the existing borough and county councils across Leicestershire, including Melton Borough Council, to be replaced by a smaller number of larger, ‘unitary’ councils.
Existing parish councils, which currently serve all rural parts of Melton Borough will be unaffected by this change. They will remain and work with the new unitary council for their areas.
The town of Melton Mowbray does not currently have a parish or town council.

Why your views matter
By completing the survey and telling us your thoughts you can help shape the public services throughout Melton Mowbray in the future.
Please note this is not the start of the formal legal process required to create new town or parish councils, and no decision has been made about whether to carry out this work.
Your views will help us to understand what our communities think about a potential Melton Mowbray Town Council and whether this is something you would like the council to consider in the future.
What happens next
If there is interest in setting up a Melton Mowbray Town Council our officers can consider starting the formal process at a suitable time.
The process would involve initiating a 'Community Governance Review'. This review is a formal legal process which allows councils to assess, and potentially change, governance arrangements within local communities, including the creation or alteration of town and parish councils.
Due to the timescales associated with both the legal process and establishing any new council, it is likely the earliest a town council would come into being would be April 2028.
