Leicestershire and Rutland Local Government Reorganisation
Overview
Councils are changing in your area – have a say on how they may look in the future!
Government wants to replace district, borough and county councils in Leicestershire and Rutland with new unitary authorities.
We are working with the six other Leicestershire district councils and Rutland County Council on a plan to create three unitary councils, one for North Leicestershire and Rutland, one for South Leicestershire and one for the city.
It’s called the North, City South proposal.
The plan would:
◾️ Keep councils connected and accountable to local communities
◾️ Simplify services for residents, businesses, and partners
◾️ Protect the vulnerable and get support to people sooner
◾️ Deliver devolution and economic growth
◾️ Boost efficiency, saving nearly £43 million a year
Thousands of residents have already helped shape our initial plan but we’re now working on a more detailed proposal for government.
Communities are at the heart of the North, City, South plan and that’s why we have launched an engagement exercise to seek further views from residents, organisations, businesses, and other stakeholders.
Why your views matter
As changes to local government in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland are being considered, your views can help shape the future of the councils delivering services for you.
If you live or work anywhere in Leicestershire, Leicester or Rutland, these proposals to change the number and size of councils will affect the council tax you pay and the services you receive, from recycling and waste to social care and highways. It is important that you have a say in how local services should be delivered in the future.
